At our last meeting we were privileged enough to have the lovely Lasma Poisa – a Photographic Artist based here in Swansea.
During the evening she took us on a fascinating walk through her own photographic journey looking at issues of identity, self-discovery and feminism amongst other things. I found her photos challenging for several reasons: She didn’t always aim for the most technically perfect shot (blurred can indeed be brilliant!), she looked at things from different perspectives (countries photographed though misty, rain splashed windows) and explored deeper issues within her projects that delved into the expression of what was going on for her on a personal front (I loved the various images of foods and empty cans on the floor).
I was left feeling less concerned about winning the cup (yes, you know I am competitive and am yet to walk away with that much sought after trophy!) and inspired to try something new. So our new project has been designed with this in mind: “Who Are We?” – you can make it as deep or as superficial as you fancy. Let’s approach this as an artist would a sketchbook, try new things, push those boundaries, look at things from different perspectives.
Lasma mentioned several influences and amongst them were photographers such as Nikki S Lee, Caleb Cole and Cindy Sherman. Marilyn Monroe and the colourfully dressed Pussyriot also featured heavily. Take a look at their work and let it make you think.
We are indebted to Lasma for opening up a new style of photography – it was another cracking evening. I am looking forward to seeing our results in the New Year.
